9 presidential candidates set for debates as Chilean election looms

The upcoming presidential election provides several firsts since Chile’s return to democracy in 1990: the first official presidential primary elections, the first time voting is optional and registration automatic, and the first time presidential debates have had to accommodate nine candidates — more than double the number of the last election.
