United National Congress (UNC) leadership hopeful Vasant Bharath has challenged the current leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, to a public televised debate.

The Trinidad and Tobago Debates Commission (TTDC) yesterday announced that two Leaders’ Debates, scheduled to take place today and on August 27, have been cancelled.

The TTDC officially made the announcement yesterday in a release, although citizens had already anticipated the events being cancelled.

The Trinidad and Tobago Debates Commission (TTDC) is refuting a claim that it is aligned to the People's National Movement (PNM) or any political party.

State-owned Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG) paid a professional fee of $10,000 each to the three people who interviewed Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on July 30.

In lieu of a debate between the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley, State-owned Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG) will be hosting a leadership exchange where the Prime Minister will be asked a number of questions by a panel comprising two men and one woman for 90 minutes.

Rowley also said he is “always ready” to participate in the national leaders debate stating the record would show that the PNM has never backed down from a debate hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Debates Commission (TTDC).

Rowley, who said the commission had assured him the debate would take place after nomination day, said while a national debate would be useful he would not be relying on it to debate with the population.
